Trench Rescue in Ipswich, MA

(NECN: Greg Wayland, Ipswich, Mass.) – Crews worked for about three hours to save a construction worker who was trapped in a trench on Country Road in Ipswich, Mass.

Multiple police, fire and regional technical rescue crews finally pulled the man, in his 40s, from under a sewer pipe.

“We had a trench collapse. We had a company working on the side of 1A, installing a sewer line,” said Chief Jack Parow of the Ipswich Fire Department. “The worker was trapped about seven to eight feet down into the hole.”

“I think it was critical just to stabilize that scene right away,” said Ipswich Police Chief Paul Nikas. “Get help moving, and getting him air.”

The unidentified worker from North Reading was transported by helicopter to Boston Medical Center. His injuries are not life-threatening.
