Year of the Rescue, FIREFIGHTER GRAB VIDEO, Reducing Civilian Fatalities Below 2000

As of yesterday, April 5th, 2022, Firefighter Rescue Survey has received reports of 300 incidents where civilians have been rescued by Firefighters in the first 90 days of the year. That equates to nearly 3.33 incidents per day  nationwide where firefighters are making a grabs and giving the citizens a change to live another day.

Civilians continue to lose their lives in fires. Programs focused on fire prevention have made a significant impact at reducing the overall numbers. But for the last nine  years the numbers have reached a level where they cannot seem to drop below 2000.

20,557 civilian home fire fatalities over nine years.

  • 2,266 civilian home fire fatalities Jan. 1 – Dec. 31, 2021.
  • 2,140 civilian home fire fatalities Jan. 1 – Dec. 31, 2020.
  • 2,141 civilian home fire fatalities Jan. 1 – Dec. 31, 2019.
  • 2,334 civilian home fire fatalities Jan. 1 – Dec. 31, 2018.
  • 2,291 civilian home fire fatalities Jan. 1 – Dec. 31, 2017.
  • 2,293 civilian home fire fatalities Jan. 1 – Dec. 31, 2016.
  • 2,291 civilian home fire fatalities Jan. 1 – Dec. 31, 2015.
  • 2,415 civilian home fire fatalities Jan. 1 – Dec. 31, 2014.

Expect Fire, Expect Victims

When fire prevention methods are not continuing to reduce fire deaths, fire ground operations need a review to see how we can improve our abilities on the fireground for THEM. We are the the last line of defense for the civilians, we owe them an improved or modified service delivery to make a reduction in deaths.

We are making an impact as reflected in the results that continue to be reported by Firefighter Rescue Survey. View and interpret the data sets below. How might you apply these successes for people within your community who rely on you to come get them when their lives are in peril.
