Engine Company Operations “Water on the Fire” – Pelham, AL – Thursday, November 7, 2019

The old adage: “Put the wet stuff on the red stuff'” still stands today. The fire service continues to rely on water as our primary means of extinguishment. Even though we have made tremendous advances in apparatus, bunker gear, and thermal imaging technology, WATER is still the most widely used and the most effective extinguishing agent at the majority of structure fires. We have added large diameter supply and 1.75″ attack hose to move this water from its source to the seat of the fire for final extinguishment. With these advances, we must not forget the longtime mainstays of the fire service: two and one-half inch hose combined with low pressure nozzles are still highly effective and needed to move/deliver water to its final destination…the burning solid fuels.

This class will examine how to maximize hydrant flows, booster tank efficiency, and final delivery through both 1.75″ and 2.5″ hose. We will cover when to use LDH vs 2.5″ or 3″ hose as your supply/feeder lines. After choosing your water supply line, you must move forward to the attack line and understand when to choose 2.5″ over 1.75″, or when to use multiple 1.75″ flanking attack lines over one 2.5″. Then there is the fire beyond the single 2.5″ and that is the time to go big. Before going big, you must ensure you have the supply to do so. After going big, the class will cover the pros and cons of all size fire hose in relation to moving water and utilizing all types of master stream devices. When utilizing master stream devices, you must understand the tip size, its flow, and the variables surrounding each tip size. The final chapter of this class will be defensive and offensive modes of attack together for the best overall fire extinguishment possibilities. These most efficient fire extinguishment possibilities can only be effective if you have a complete understanding of how to get WATER on the FIRE!
