Woman Rescued in High Rise Fire in Toronto

Woman rescued from balcony after Toronto fire

As Toronto firefighters worked to put out a fire on Wellesley Street, a few members of the team rushed upstairs to rescue a woman trapped on a balcony.

In a message posted on Twitter at 7 a.m., Toronto Fire said they were investigating reports that a woman in her 50s was trapped on a balcony on the 19th floor at 200 Wellesley St. E.

Minutes later, firefighters could be seen from the CTV News chopper tending to a woman on a balcony. She was put on a chair, and carried back through her apartment.

Toronto Fire said that she was treated on site before before being brought to hospital with minor injuries.

The fire broke out inside a 19th-floor apartment of a Toronto Community Housing Corporation building just east of Sherbourne Street.

At the height of the fire, smoke could be seen wafting from the windows.

The blaze was under control by 7:30 a.m., and Toronto Fire estimated the damage at $50,000.

The fire broke out in the same building where a six-alarm blaze caused more than $1 million in damage four years ago.

Tenants who were displaced for months by the 2010 fire were involved in a class-action lawsuit and were awarded nearly $5 million in compensation.
