A man in his late 20s was taken to the hospital in serious condition after he drove his car into the Jordan River early Sunday morning.
Salt Lake City fire spokesman Jasen Asay said neighbors called 911 about 3:55 a.m. after they heard a loud noise and looked out their window and spotted a white car upside-down in the river near 500 North and Redwood Road.
Asay said the man was unable to extricate himself from the vehicle and it took about five minutes for firefighters to get him free.
The man, whose head wasn’t underwater, was conscious the whole time, but with temperatures only 10 degrees outside at the time, Asay said firefighters were concerned the man might suffer hypothermia.
Salt Lake City police are investigating why the man’s vehicle ended up in the river
