The fire broke out around 11:30 Monday morning near 95th and Burdette and was reported by a neighbor. Omaha firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames when they arrived.
Battalion Chief Tim McCaw says flames were shooting from the front windows on the first floor as they began their fire attack. The neighbor then told them that the elderly woman, who lives alone in the house, may be trapped inside.
McCaw says firefighters had to knock down the flames so they could find the steps leading to the second floor. They found the woman on the floor of a bedroom and pulled her out.
