NORFOLK, VA

Firefighters rescued three people and five were taken to a hospital after a fire at a housing complex for senior citizens in the 2700 block of Corprew Ave.

The fire was reported about 10:36 a.m. and was under control shortly after 11 a.m., said Norfolk Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Julian Williamson.

The people who were taken to a hospital were being evaluated for smoke inhalation, according to Williamson.

He said it appeared that the fire was contained to one unit inside the three-story building, but smoke likely had affected other units.

Firefighters were continuing to search the building for victims or people who needed help to get outside.
