A Career Built on Passion and Dedication

Curt “Ike” Isakson is a 30+ year veteran of the fire service, a nationally recognized speaker, motivator, educator, and consultant. His experience spans volunteer, career, and combination departments in urban, suburban, rural, and countywide settings.

He recently retired after 25 year of service with Escambia County Fire Rescue, serving as a Battalion Chief for 22 years. Before that, Curt was a Company Officer with the Pensacola Fire Department assigned to Heavy Rescue 31 for nine years, and he also worked as a Fire Inspector with the City of Mary Esther. His fire service journey began as a Junior Firefighter with the Midway Fire Protection District, where he rose through the ranks to Captain.

But Curt’s story in the fire service began even earlier—long before badges and promotions. As a teenager in the late 1980s, he fell in love with the profession. He dreamed of wearing a New Yorker helmet with a Garrity light strapped on the side, even cutting the ad out of Firehouse Magazine and asking for it as a birthday gift. He ordered a box of Garrity lights, cut inner tubes into straps, and handed them out around the station. When he met a New York firefighter who carried a rope-slung lantern, Curt built his own. Those early days taught him that tools matter, preparation matters, and passion for the job matters.

Hungry to learn, Curt devoured every issue of Firehouse and Fire Engineering, especially Tom Brennan’s “Random Thoughts” column. Each month, he put the advice into practice—buying rope, radios, and wire cutters; studying tactics; and modeling himself after urban firefighters who had learned their lessons the hard way, on the fireground. Those influences—from legends like Brennan, Vincent Dunn, Andy Fredericks, and many others—shaped his career and still inspire his teaching today.

Curt’s message is built on those early lessons: that the fireground doesn’t care if you’re urban or suburban, staffed heavy or staffed light. What matters is knowledge, preparation, passion, and the willingness to apply proven tactics under pressure. For decades, he has carried the lessons of the FDNY and other urban departments into suburban and county firegrounds across America, showing firefighters how timeless principles can be adapted to any setting.

As a professional speaker and educator, Curt brings this unique blend of lived experience and deep respect for fire service history to every class, keynote, and conference. His presentations are raw, practical, and motivational—filled with stories from a lifetime in the fire service and lessons forged through trial, error, and fireground reality. From a young junior firefighter strapping lights to helmets to a Battalion Chief leading from the front, Curt’s passion has never changed: to lift others up, push them to be their best, and leave the fire service stronger than he found it.
