It’s a good idea when two radios are available that the driver has a Tactical radio on a sling under the coat and extra radio in outer pocket or outer/over coat. When 1st Due in a County setting, a chief and/or 2nd arriving company could be a few minutes. This allows the driver to communicate with the officer going interior and not being on scan; while having the 2nd radio/outer radio on main for dispatch or Companies that failed to be on Tactical assigned channel. In the event the incident escalates to a BIG WATER EVENT, drivers can communicate on a water supply channel & stay off the Fireground channel. Just an idea. If it doesn’t work for you, than move on.
Ideas from experiences in the County setting.
I HIGHLY encourage all Chief Officers carry two portable radios at all times. Our number 1 Job is giving orders and monitoring radio traffic. I have found that having one on the tac channel & one on main really helps when operating in a Tactical Command Mode.
